A few days after my Grandad lost his battle against cancer I was at a total loss. I've never had the terrible misfortune of losing someone very close. The only way i found to help the greiving was by sitting down, having a few beers and tears then putting pen to paper (or in my case, fingers to keyboard).

As much as I like to think I'm quite brave, I just couldn't bring myself to giving the tribute at the church. Father Gareth Evans (St Michaels) was kind enough to read on my behalf -

My Grandad, My Mentor, My Hero

It’s hard for all of us to believe that this is really it
We already miss your stories, your vast wisdom and incredible wit

Although we already knew, nothing could prepare
Prepare us for the worst, now your no longer there

A bike with just one wheel, a toy plane that couldn’t fly
You could fix just about anything, with a little try

Action-Man barracks to Cindy Doll houses
Even building the HMS Bounty you did manage
You could make anything and everything, with the tools from in your garage

I remember getting bitten by a mouse in Bristol Zoo
You showed me how to “correctly” pick it up then sent it flying to the moon

A wasp sting at the Sun-Club resulted in WorldWar 3
I can recall you showing me the Victory

I remember watching from the safety of the caravan with Nan
You battling wasps with a match and a petrol can
My Grandad versus a hundred thousand angry killer wasps, and he won

That ”Great Wasp Battle” in the 1980’s was caused by a playful little me
Did I ever say sorry for that sting upon your knee?

From that moment on you have been my hero each and every day
And you’ve influenced my life in a very special way

Christmas was your finest hour with decorations galore
Even though you had enough, you always brought some more (or was that Nan?)
The lounge was transformed into a palace of pure tat
And it’s hard to complain now, because we all do just that

I can remember in the summer time you had a great big pool
And after work you’d jump in with us grandchildren to get cool
And then there would be trouble as a laugh was to be had
With us kids shouting “come on! Lets get GRANDAD”

You never had a bad day where we were concerned
And the patience you displayed was a lesson to be learned

For they only hold memories of a man so great
A mentor, a hero and a very special mate

We thank you for your time Grandad, your bravery we admired
Still managing to smile when you were so very, very tired
And in those final moments before you went away
We promised that you would be remembered, each and every day

The last time that I saw you, I came to say goodbye
But all that I could do is look at you and cry

But I now know that you're happy and I fully understand
You've gone to a better place now, that very special land

So now I'll take this moment to tell you that we care
We love and miss you lots and we’re glad you're now up there

You're up there with your family and friends, and pain is in the past
Although now that you're gone, our love for you will last

So rest your weary eyes Grandad
And forget about the pain

Just make sure you keep smiling
For we WILL meet again

Goodnight Grandad

Lots of Love for now and ever more

We will never forget you
